Ease Of Use
This Black & decker mower comes almost completely assembled with only the handle that needs to be attached. This takes less than five minutes and the first time you start it up, you will be taken aback by how light the entire unit is. Moreover being self-propelled, it feels featherweight. I particularly like the fact that it takes a couple of seconds to reach its preset speed so you don’t actually get jerked the moment you start it up. Some may find this annoying but trust me, you don’t want to feel the punch of a no push mower when you aren’t ready to move along with it.
The deck size is ample enough for lawns under 0.75 acre and you won’t have to make a second pass anywhere. Just keep guiding it in the direction you want to mow and it does the rest. However, beware it won’t handle inclines more than 10 degrees.
Cut Quality
As expected from a cordless mower, the Black & Decker SPCM1936 electric lawn mower does a fine job when cutting through medium to low height grass. However, with anything more than a foot long you will eventually get bogged down. An extra pass tends to sort out the cut quality. Overall, I was quite satisfied with the cut quality and it does not change whether you bag, mulch or rear discharge. I think it is a big disadvantage that the mulch unit and side-discharge option should be purchased separately. It does no justice to this otherwise great mower.
Height Adjustment
Adjusting the height is real easy as I explained earlier but I do find the low setting to be too low. The SPCM1936 has 3 height options to choose from. However it tends to skip past taller grass on the low setting and I am left with poorly cut grass. I found the 2nd and 3rd setting to be ideal for taller grass. Also if you plan on mulching then using a higher height setting will leave your lawn looking lusher and well mulched.
Motor Power
36 Volt is more than sufficient to power the 19 inch deck and self-propulsion of the mower. You will need to initially push the mower a couple of inches ahead to disengage the gears and get it moving on its own accord. This I presume is more of a safety measure. As for the batteries they ought to last well over 2 years since most Black & Decker batteries do go well over a period of three years. Beware though, replacement batteries overtime tend to become costlier as the technology ages so best to get a second battery and alternate between the two. Also, you must keep the battery fully charged at all times to prolong the power output over months.
Maintenance
The polymer deck, streamlined body and axle design all ensure longevity. I don’t think this mower will need any replacement components over a span of two years and if you do come across any problem in this time, the warranty will cover most of the repairs or replacement components.
Cost Effectiveness
At around $400 the Black & Decker SPCM1936 electric lawn mower isn’t the most expensive cordless mower, but it is not cheap either. Nevertheless, for this price you do get a self-propelled immensely powerful and easy-to-use mower which is covered by a 2-year warranty.
