Lawn Boy 17732 CARB Compliant Self Propelled Lawn Mower Review

Lawn Boy Mowers are the rising star under the self propelled lawn mowers. Time for me to review the Lawn Boy 17732 CARB Compliant self propelled lawn mower. Here we go….

The Lawn Boy 17732 CARB Compliant Self Propelled Lawn Mower with its 21 inch mower deck offers improved traction and easier maneuverability over its siblings. This particular model works on rear-wheel drive and offers up two speed choices. The 17732 version is exactly similar to Lawn Boy’s 10732 lawn mower except for the fact that it is CARB compliant and hence can be shipped to California! Triple discharge ability allows you to mulch grass, collect clippings in a bag and even side discharge. Changing between modes needs no extra tools and takes less than a minute. Furthermore, it has a tri-cut blade system that reduces the surface area without compromising on the cut quality. The end result is a much lighter yet durable steel deep dome deck excellent for heavy mulching.

In-depth Review of the Lawn Boy 17732 Lawn Mower

Ease Of Use

Lawn Boy really do know how to make the most user-friendly equipment. This “no push” lawn mower (remember, it propels itself over your yard!) is yet another example of technology thoughtfully designed to improve user experience. It always starts with a single pull, no matter what! Everything with regard to the deck and back wheels are full metal, to be exact steel and yet the entire mower is lightweight. Two speed control can get a bit harrowing especially on flats as the high-speed setting is a bit too fast for my liking. Height adjustments are easy to achieve and work great. Likewise attaching the bag is a simple case of following the four step instruction in the manual. It makes very little noise for a gas mower and runs greener than the rest being CARB complaint. Overall, this is indeed an easy mower to handle.

Cut Quality

Absolutely perfect all the time. The Lawn Boy 17732 CARB Compliant Self Propelled Lawn Mower in fact does an equally commendable job on wet grass. I tried it out right after a light thunderstorm a week back and to my astonishment, it pulls easy across the entire yard, even over slopes. The cut quality is consistent regardless of the terrain condition and height adjustment. Side discharge, bagging and mulching all have the same overall cut quality.

Height Adjustment

While the mower has an impressive 1.25 to 3.75 inch height adjustability, the rear tires have metal studs to set the height, but the front have hollow plastic studs. I believe the front studs can give up any time especially if you are not careful enough when changing the height. Pity, since this mower could be perfect from all angles had it not been for these tiny components made from plastic.

Motor Power

Lawn-Boy 17732 Carb Compliant Motor Detail

144cc OHV Kohler engine isn’t the largest or most powerful of the lot. I believe Husqvarna and others provide more power, but this Lawn Boy mower is without a doubt greener among them all. Even though the smaller motor delivers less RPMs to the blades, the unique blade design and overall performance helps overcome this.

Maintenance

You have to be really careful with the front height adjustment studs. Other than that it needs the usual maintenance of changing oil as instructed, winterizing and cleaning of the deck every couple of weeks. Remember to use a mower blade spray to reduce friction on the blades and keep all three sharp longer.

Cost Effectiveness

At less than $300, the Lawn Boy 17732-model is inexpensive and reliable. It is at least twice as cheap compared to similar Husqvarna or Murray and others. Low noise levels, better mileage and efficiency, decent construction and sensible design are this mower’s major attractions.

PROS:
  • Suberb cut quality
  • Price tag
  • Easy to use
  • Compact design

CONS:
  • Hollow front plastic wheel studs
  • just 144cc engine

  1. i bought model 17732 in October 2020. half way through 2021 the self drive stopped (gears jumping on wheels). used rest ofseason without self drive.Tore apart this year of 2022 ( i was a tech for 30 year, i can diagnose and fix mechanical things) to diagnose problems. rear axle does not sit on bushing edge properly, alowing right wheel to have play and stripped gear off wheel. left medal gear shaft is alowing gear to ride to far inward and stripped gear and the inside of left wheel. Went to local shop and ordered new wheels with gears and axle to see if anything been fixed or redesigned with parts. New parts are same as old.Ifi install new parts, will do same thing ina few months. The plastis rear housing that holds everything onself drive unit is bolted to deck to far inward. Is there any repair that can be done or am i forced to buy a new mower to have self drive?
