In-depth Review of the LawnMaster LMRM1601 16-inch Reel Mower
Ease of Use
Especially since the cutting is completely mechanical and there’s no motorized mechanism to run the blades, it takes a great deal of effort to tug any reel mower. So it’s expected from a user-friendly mechanical lawn mower that it should not be heavy. I’m glad to state that the LawnMaster LRM1601 weighs around 30 pounds, and hence doesn’t tire you out with all the pushing. Moreover, there’s hardly any assembling required; you just need to fit the handles and get started right away. On the whole, there are no complicated settings or adjustment to break your head over. But I should also mention a couple of issues, first of which is that it does not do a good job if the turf is too uneven. Nor does it function well when there’s too much thatch or weeds involved. This mower does a good job only on an even-surfaced yard, sized up to one fourth of an acre.
Cut Quality
I’ve used several reel mowers in which the wheels keep getting stuck in thick patches or small pits. Thankfully that’s not the case with this LawnMaster 16-inch reel mower. The 7” rear wheels and 10” front wheels are perfectly coordinated when pushed. I’ve already spoken about the 5 blade-helical system. Now, during my initial use of the machine during the first 15 weeks or so, the blades were deliciously sharp. Afterwards, I’ve started to notice a gradual decline, and I assume in a couple of months ahead, I would have to get them re-sharpened. I’ve tested this reel mower on various grass types; I mean conventional ones like Kentucky and Zoysia, as well as uncommon ones like Bentgrass. Only thing, you cannot mow very large areas (considering the 16” cutting deck), very dense or tall patches and uneven terrain. That’s why this LawnMaster mower is mostly recommended as a back-up mower for urban home-owners.
Height Adjustment
There are 6 different height adjustments of the cutting blades, all lying between 1.375 inches to 2.5 inches. Honestly that’s not a very big range, but it’s manageable for the kind of touch-ups and trimming that the LawnMaster 16” Reel Mower is supposed to do. Adjusting the height is very easy, and so is the height adjustment of the handles.
Maintenance
This reel mower from LawnMaster comes with a 2 years warranty period, which is quite impressive, if we take into account the purchase cost. Also another pro is that there are no major maintenance and repairs-related expenditure in the long run. The only places where you’ll need to shelve out money is for the periodic sharpening of blades, and for unforeseen emergencies. The material and build also seems to be quite durable, unlike so many other flimsy reel mowers in the market that end up with broken parts in just a few uses!
Cost Effectiveness
If you compare the functionality vis-à-vis the costing of the LawnMaster LMRM1601, it comes to being satisfactory. There’s a limited range of mowing that this reel mower performs with finesse (unless you’re a Superhero who can mow across your entire half acre turf without getting tired!) You can consider purchasing this mower as a secondary one, in addition to the electric or gas-powered one that you primarily use.
