While I don’t particular lean towards Lawn Boy, their quality and dedication towards customer satisfaction through design and craftsmanship inevitably attracts a lot of attention. In-depth Review of the Lawn Boy 10734 with Electric Start
Ease Of Use
Lawn Boy always makes mowers that are easy to use. The lawn boy is no different. However, with electric start, it has to be the easiest gas mower among all. The packaging comes with an almost assembled mower. You attach the handle, the blades, check all joints, fuel it up, add the oil and connect the battery – all under 20 minutes. My Lawn Boy mower came with the battery fully charged so I haven’t yet run out of juice. When I do, it comes with a charging cable that connects near the handle top into any conventional socket.
One turn of the key and this mower comes into existence. Oh! Beware its tendency to snap back at you on start-up especially if you have the throttle released. While a gradual increment in speed would have been welcomed, the sudden jarring start isn’t so bad once you get used to it. However, the wheel treads don’t help much even on normal dry grass. They are more ornamental than anything so expect spinning and skidding tires on wet surfaces.
Cut Quality
Since majority of the technology used in this electric start variant comes from the non-electric versions of Lawn Boy I was expecting a similar cut quality. You won’t be disappointed even at the lowest height settings or on soggy pitches. However, because the tires don’t offer much traction, you will inevitably miss out a few patches especially on high speed.
Motor Power
Wth its 144cc, 6.5 OHV non-CARB Compliant Kohler engine, this Lawn Boy 10734 self propelled lawn mower isn’t the most powerful and I have used mowers with way more torque and power than this, but I think that the lack of power does not detract its overall performance. Moving uphill, it has sufficient torque to drag you along without you having to exert any additional effort. As far as cutting through tall grass goes, it does a fair job although with sturdy grass variants you might have to make a second pass.
Height Adjustment
From 1.25 to 3.75 inches you get to select your exact height using just one lever per axle. This is great as it controls the entire axle and not each individual wheels meaning less components to worry about. Selecting the height is simple enough and the lock mechanism works well even when navigating over turbid surfaces.
Maintenance
Lawn Boy always wins hands down with regards to maintenance. They offer a long 3 year warranty on the motor that includes start-up issues even if it is caused due to poor maintenance. Your Lawn Boy fails to start on the second turn of the key, they give you a free repair! As for the other components, you don’t really have to worry about anything as the overall build quality is impressive.
Cost Effectiveness
At around $300, this Lawn Boy is a tad bit more expensive than its other siblings but then again you are getting a quick starting, easy-to-use mower. Almost half the price of a competing Honda or Snapper unit, the Lawn Boy 10734 lawn mower is well worth the expenditure.
